Ebook About
The inside story of the historic 2020 presidential election and Joe Biden’s harrowing ride to victory, from the #1 New York Times bestselling authors of Shattered, the definitive account of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 campaign. Almost no one thought Joe Biden could make it back to the White House—not Donald Trump, not the two dozen Democratic rivals who sought to take down a weak front-runner, not the mega-donors and key endorsers who feared he could not beat Bernie Sanders, not even Barack Obama. The story of Biden’s cathartic victory in the 2020 election is the story of a Democratic Party at odds with itself, torn between the single-minded goal of removing Donald Trump and the push for a bold progressive agenda that threatened to alienate as many voters as it drew. In Lucky, #1 New York Times bestselling authors Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes use their unparalleled access to key players inside the Democratic and Republican campaigns to unfold how Biden’s nail-biting run for the presidency vexed his own party as much as it did Trump. Having premised his path on unlocking the Black vote in South Carolina, Biden nearly imploded before he got there after a relentless string of misfires left him freefalling in polls and nearly broke. Allen and Parnes brilliantly detail the remarkable string of chance events that saved him, from the botched Iowa caucus tally that concealed his terrible result, to the pandemic lockdown that kept him off the stump, where he was often at his worst. More powerfully, Lucky unfolds the pitched struggle within Biden’s general election campaign to downplay the very issues that many Democrats believed would drive voters to the polls, especially in the wake of Trump’s response to nationwide protests following the murder of George Floyd. Even Biden’s victory did not salve his party’s wounds; instead, it revealed a surprising, complicated portrait of American voters and crushed Democrats’ belief in the inevitability of a blue wave. A thrilling masterpiece of political reporting, Lucky is essential reading for understanding the most important election in American history and the future that will come of it.

Book Lucky: How Joe Biden Barely Won the Presidency Review :

The authors clearly have a message to sell to the reader: Joe Biden was "lucky" to win the Democratic nomination, and even luckier to beat Trump, because voters' fears about COVID overcame Biden's long list of political liabilities. Most of this book focuses on the Democratic primaries, as 20+ candidates competed for the nomination. Biden's late entry, and early gaffes, stumbles made him an improbable nominee. His resurrection after the South Carolina primary is well told. This part of the book (between South Carolina and the Democratic nomination) I found well-written and fascinating. However, the relatively brief section in this book on the actual campaign between Biden and Trump seems superficial, with shaky analysis. As I understood the authors' opinion, Trump was heading to victory, except when a critical mass of white suburban voters in a few battleground states turned against him. While this may be part of the story, I suspect that subsequent books on this election will focus more on the role played by minority and inner city voters. Also, the authors' belief in the appeal of Trump's unbalanced behavior (including lies, racist taunts, etc.) seems exaggerated. Did Biden win because of his bland centrism, or because a majority of voters in key states were eager to vote for someone who actually wanted to serve the people instead of himself? Was Trump's handling of the COVID crisis the major reason for his loss? These and other questions are raised, but not sufficiently answered in this book. Still, I recommend this book as an important if incomplete piece of historical analysis.
On the one hand, what would I expect from Allen who took all the information available about the Trump/Clinton campaign and decided to ignore 80% of it (Putin's interference on Trump's behalf--same with Assange/WikiLeaks--all "welcomed" by Trump, per numerous reports, including last year's Senate Intelligence committee. Instead, Allen blamed Hillary and came up with "Shattered" (dreams... no glass ceiling broken... etc.)So I shouldn't have really been surprised by such an unflattering look at Trump's 2020 opponent's campaign. Even though Biden got a -record- number of votes and beat Trump by 7 million votes--hardly "barely". He also won 306 to 232 -- the same margin that Trump called a "landslide" when he had the same total in 2016.I gave this book an extra star (total: 2) because they did a ton of interviews and research and organized all that information very well, in nearly 500 pages. That's not easy, so although I dislike a lot of their "trees not forest" approach, kudos for that difficult task. The problem is twofold: (1) They don't seem to know Joe Biden and he never becomes a central figure even though this book is all about his campaign. It appears they interviewed many involved, but not Biden himself. Or his wife. Or Harris. So it's flawed by just not having any real personality or narrative. Also...(2) Another narrative in a book about one person's campaign, would be the competition. For that, Allen would have needed a lot more about Trump. There's...some... a bit about covid and George Floyd in particular. But overall, it is very, very weak on Trump and without him--and without a real look at Biden--how can you understand why Biden won?You can't. That's why the biggest problem is that the book basically ends on Nov 7th when all votes have been counted and Biden is clearly the winner. That means, they missed the crazy transition and all of Trump's efforts to undermine the results. Yes, they are able to tack on an introduction that describes the events of January 6. But, given the rest of the book--no insight into Trump or his campaign and strategy--the events of Jan 6 just seem "out of the blue". If anything they highlight all the weaknesses of this book--not the research or organization and writing, but the real lack of historical point of view. As a result, it's just not a very good book unless you have great fascination for the minutiae of staff experience on a presidential campaign.
