Edited review** This book has become like the procrastination bible for me. I don't know wht I was so mean the first time round. It is more like having a personalized procrastination coach right there with you, that you can talk to for the rest, and I mean this seriously, the REST of your life, Saying that procrastination is rooted in anxiety was a game changer, and not something that can be solved quickly. So here are some ways it changed my life.1) I wrote a book. Yes, Me! The affirmations have seriously, seriously helped me. I made myself personalized affirmations and since then it is so much easier to get work done because it works on my cognitive error everyday.2) The tools to overcome blocks has been so good.3) The work of worrying has been one of the most incredible tools I have ever found- not just for procrastination, but for life in general. The tools here as well as 'how to stop worrying and start living' have been game changers.I was raised to be an extreme perfectionist. A OR NOTHING was the mentality. Being an artist now created challenges with how I approached my work, versus the system I used and learned in the systems of learning i was trained in. This book helps me undo all that and free myself. I LOVE YOU NEIL. THANK YOU.P.ps. I still haven't finished the book yet. Lol! But I keep re-reading and re-reading.-----------------------------------------------------I'll tell you what. This book took me 5 months to get through, because, well- I procrastinate. I'm not even done with the book. My biggest struggle with it, has been just how much planning, thought and analysis he asks for to change the habits. Thats precisely why I procrastinate. Because I hate planning, thought and analysis. Asking me to, each week, create an 'unschedule' , or the dreaded 'look at your life in 3 days' which by the way took me 3 months to do, or 'do this or do that'. I mean really, that's not how procrastination works. I think, if you have a therapist, like he was to his clients, it would be an easier habit to dismantle, but the book... though I now understand that it's anxiety behind it, and what is behind that... the book... it was a drag and the exercises are not procrastinator friendly. I procrastinated them all myself.
I really should wait until I've finished the book, but I've already seen enough results that I can't procrastinate on this review!The message, tone and style won't be for everyone, but it works for those of us who need a heart-centered approach. Start reading, notice what resonates, and when a possible option occurs to you, just try it. That's how I have ended up with a system of planning documents that enabled me to make a full stir-fry dinner in the evening in the middle of a work week.I'm generally too exhausted to cook at night during the week, to the point that food spoils in the fridge because my good intentions to eat healthy just aren't enough. But an affirmation came to me while reading: "When I am crystal clear on the very next step, I can do anything." So I wrote everything down, followed the plan to the letter, and it worked. Doesn't sound like much, but trust me, this is revolutionary in my little corner of the world. The stir-fry was a successful test case, and now I'm working on other plans and things are starting to shift.I've read a lot of books on procrastination. This one is different.
